A-32-year-old man of Kitwe’s Zamtan area has committed suicide by hanging himself with a pair of socks whilst in police custody at Zamtan police post.

Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer Peacewell Mweemba said that brief facts are that on January 27, 2023 around 23:00hrs, Philison Kahalu the late victim whilst in the company of others unknown entered Muleya’s farm situated within Zamtan area to steal.

Mr Mweemba said the alert farm Manager Maurice Bwalya 27, heard the noise from the goat’s keeping house and went to check.

He said Bwalya found that the same unknown people had chocked one goat already though it later survived but criminals started to run away.

“However, he managed to apprehend the now deceased with assistance from members of the public after shouting for help. Suspect was later brought to the nearest Police Post where the report was made and docket of case opened in respect to the same,” he said.

Mr Mweemba said on January 30, 2023, officers had conducted routine cell checks at 01:00hours and 03:00hours respectively where the situation was quite.

He said around 04:30hours officers on duty heard noise from other three suspects in custody shouting that one of them had hanged himself.

“Police officers with scenes of crime from Main station visited the Post, It was observed that the deceased who was putting on a meroon round neck T- shirt with a black jeans had used two half pairs of socks to tie himself from the window burglar,” he said.

Mr Mweemba said interviews with other three in-mates Frederick Mulenga 27, said that he went to urinate when he discovered his fellow in-mate and informed his other colleagues Ephraim Chitalu 28, and Chela Sikaonga 24.

No physical injuries were observed apart from that he had fecal matter in his trousers and a protruding tongue.
