Chingola Municipal Council has commissioned two market shelters at Kabuta and Mupopopo in Nchanga Constituency.
This brings the total number of commissioned shelters to four out of the eight newly built market shelters in the district.
The commissioned shelters which are built at cost of K350, 000 each from the Constituency Development Fund comes with modern ablution blocks.
Speaking at the commissioning of the shelters, Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Bright Nundwe said government attaches a lot of importance to women in the market.
Mr Nundwe said government has built marketer shelters so that the women can trade in a good and protected environment away from danger.
He said that marketeers should not be taken lightly because they have educated a lot of people through selling, hence government’s effort in building up shelters.
“It is the sacrifice of a marketeers that has seen their children reach great heights, that is why we want to ensure that we secure a place for the marketeers by building shelters so that they trade in side markets not by roadsides where they are not safe,” he said.
The PS commended Chingola Municipal Council management for putting Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to good use.
Mr Nundwe said that CDF should be channeled to service delivery like the way Chingola Council has done.
He urged the people to guard the shelters jealously.
And Chingola District Commissioner Agnes Tonga said that a marketeer is important because she feeds her family from selling in the market.
Ms Tonga said that Government emphasize on the need for a women to have a decent shelter to trade in her merchandise hence the need for them to have a conducive environment to trade in.
