In observing the Make Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy campaign this month, Solwezi Municipal Council launched the 2021/2022 Tree Planting which was held at Kabwela Primary School in Kamalamba ward.
The Kabwela community members, Kabwela Primary School administration and the pupils could not hide their joy when they welcomed His Worship the Mayor, area Councillor for Kamalamba ward, the Town Clerk and a few Directors from the Council through song and dance.
Kabwela was chosen as the best place for holding of the event as it is one of the few schools in the district that has well taken care of the trees that were donated and planted in 2019 and hence the municipality saw it fit to have the launch from the same school.
Emphasis from His Worship the Mayor and the Town Clerk was on the need to ponder on what kind of world will be left for the future generations noting that it becomes imperative that in as much as we plant the trees, plans and mechanisms should be put in place on how to replace the trees.
It was said that the climate change being experienced in the country and world over is because human beings havent been fair to the environment by ravaging it and it is now reacting to the effects being caused to it. Cited was the rampant charcoal burning and cutting of trees indiscriminately as some of the activities creating some of the problems being faced.
It was gratifying that both the young and the old in Kabwela took part in planting the trees at Kabwela Primary School led by His Worship the Mayor, Kamalamba ward Councillor, Town Clerk and the Directors.
The Kabwela community has however been urged to consider the trees planted as their personal properties and not for Solwezi Municipal Council nor the school administration by looking after them until they grow and reap the benefits of having them.
Later in the day, Solwezi Municipal Council staff were at Solwezi School of Nursing, Mushitala Primary School and the Kamalamba ward Community Centre where 50 different types of trees and fruits were planted each.
The Forestry department which is now under the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment donated 2000 trees to the municipality for purposes of planting in different localities in the district in order to realize a green economy. The planting exercise will continue in other public places until all the donated trees are exhausted.
The 2021/2022 Tree Planting is being held under the theme: The pathway to Green Economy.
