A total of 31 stray and unregistered dogs have been killed by the Solwezi Municipal Council.

This is in a dog cropping exercise done by the council that ran between November 11 to 16, 2019.

Solwezi Municipal Council Assistant Public Relations Manager Esther Chirwa told The Independent Observer that the local authority undertook the exercise after receiving various complaints from residents of attacks by the stray animals.

Ms Chirwa said the areas visited by the council working in conjunction with the veterinary department, the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) and the Zambia Police include Kyawama area, Airport area, Zambia compound, Messengers area, urban area, hospital compound, stadium area, Zangamenu area, kandundu and Town centre.

She said that according to the control of Dogs Act Cap 247 of the laws of Zambia, the council is mandated to register and control the population of Dogs in the district.

“Solwezi Municipal Council is calling on the dog owners to have their pets registered and vaccinated against rabies with the council to prevent the dogs from possible elimination.

“The dog registration sensitization exercises are still ongoing to ensure that the residents are educated on the importance of having their dogs registered with the council and vaccinated against rabies,” she said.
