As a way of commemorating the African Day for Decentralisation and the Local Government Week, Solwezi Municipal Council yesterday hosted Ndola City Council in various sporting activities. At the same time, the interactive games were part of this month’s Make Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Campaign with a bias towards the healthy aspect.
A day which began on a gloomy note due to the seemingly unending rainfall did not deter the two sides from going neck to neck in Volleyball, Netball and Football preceded by Aerobics which saw His Worship the Mayor of Solwezi Mr Remmy Kalepa, Councillors and Directors joining in the workouts.
Medical check-ups which included; COVID-19 tests and vaccinations, Malaria, Blood Pressure, Eye tests as well as the Body Mass Index (BMI) were also done by medical personnel from Solwezi General Hospital and Marybegg.
Getting to the games, Solwezi Municipal Council carried the day when they beat their opponent 24-9 in Netball; with the host equally winning in Volleyball by 3-0. The visiting team however carried the day in football when they beat the host 1-0.
The Town Clerk addressed the participants at the end of the games and assured Ndola City Council that his Council will make a reciprocal visit in order to enhance interactions among Council staff.
Eng. Luanga pointed out that the importance of sports cannot be overemphasised as it is very difficult for Councils to perform and deliver on their mandate with an unhealthy workforce.
The Town Clerk challenged Officers from the two Councils to work around ensuring that games of such nature are held quarterly to attain continuous social interactions.
Solwezi Municipal Council this week joined the rest of the Country in commemorating the Local Government Week from 22nd to 26th November, 2021 under the theme: “The contribution of Arts, Culture and Heritage to the sustainable development of African Cities and territories”.
Sport is said to promote sustainable lifestyles, encourage demand for sustainable consumption of goods and services and be able to raise awareness about the need for sustainable consumption and production for healthy life and healthy people.
Among other activities held in commemorating the week was the launch of the Customer Service Charter, Code of Ethics and the Gifts and Benefits Policy as well as Radio Programs to explain the services that the local authority is mandated to provide within its jurisdiction.
