Government says schools won’t reopen on 8th July, as announced by the PS for general education, Jobbicks Kalumba, because the situation is under review.
Ministry of Information Permanent Secretary Amos Malupenga says between 8th and 15th July, 2021, a joint ministerial team and DMMU, will visit schools and colleges, to find out if they are ready for re-opening.
Mr Malupenga said the preliminary assessment conducted on the readiness of the schools and higher learning institutions to re-open after 21 days of closure indicate that there is need for further preparations and monitoring of the COVID-19 situation in the country.
He said while Government is resolved to keeping learners in schools as responding to COVID-19 continues they is need to strike the delicate balance between saving lives and allowing learning to continue.
“The COVID-19 situation in the country has seen a generalized person-to-person transmission of the infection with an average positivity rate of 24%, increased admissions to hospitals and deaths of which leaners and staffs remain at risk,” he said.
