Plans to import water into Southern on card

Government is contemplating embarking on an ambitious project to improve water situation in Southern Province by tapping the commodity from other parts of the country where water is available all year round.

Minister of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection, Raphael Nakacinda, said consultations on the feasibility of harvesting and channeling water to drought prone region are underway.

“We are looking at conceptualizing this initiative and see how it can be done and improve the water situation in some parts of province,” he said.

The Minister said water can be gotten from other parts of the country like Luapula and Western provinces where water is abundant.

He said it is imperative that this initiative is actualized because it is a sure way of providing water to the area.

Mr Nakacinda said this is achievable because other desert countries in North Africa have managed and agriculture is flourishing.

He said Government will not sit idle and allow water going to waste when other parts of the country are dire need of the commodity.

The Minister is also impressed to see a solar powered water plant that services most parts of Choma district.
