NAQEZ appeals to president Lungu to intervene in the untimely reopening of schools

The National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) has passionately appealed to the Republican President, Edgar Lungu, to  intervene against the untimely reopening of schools.

Earlier this week, ministry of general education Permanent secretary announced that schools will reopen on 8th July, 2021

NAQEZ executive director Aaron Chansa says it is shocking that at the time when the nation is losing 72 lives per day, Universities and bars have been closed, and the weather is favorable to the virus, that is when the Ministry has announced reopening of schools.

“Our quick survey reveals that a lot of Teachers are currently infected with the virus, a good number have died and most schools are not yet ready to reopen, it is therefore uncharacteristic for the Ministry to defy all these ugly facts on the ground and go ahead to reopen schools on 8th July,” he said.

Mr Chansa said with the overwhelming majority of teachers and parents against reopening of schools, they are confident that the head of state will prevail over the decision to reopen schools.

“The decision is in bad faith, which has annoyed teachers in the country and has immense potential to tarnish the image of Government,” he said.
