Kitwe Fire Brigade rescues baby from pit latrine

A newly Born baby has been retrieved from a pit latrine by Kitwe City Council Fire brigade officers in St Antony area.

The baby was dumped by its mother who has not been found.

And Kitwe City Council Public Relations Manager Roy Kuseka said in an interview that the local authority was informed of the incident in the early hours of today.

Mr Kuseka said the fire brigade team was alerted by state police officers who in turn helped in retrieving the infant.

He said the baby is still alive and has been taken to Central Teaching hospital where it has been admitted.

And Kitwe Central Teaching Hospital Public Relations Officer Phoebe Chileya said the hospital received a 1Kg baby that was suspected of being dumped in a shallow pit latrine and at the time it was taken to the hospital its temperature was not stable.

Ms Chileya said the baby has been put under a special care unit were it is receiving treatment and is currently breathing well.

She said the baby has been put in the incubator and is in perfect condition.
