Govt to implement SI on 50 percent for local transporters

Ministry of Transport and Communications Permanent Secretary Misheck Lungu has assured local transporters that government is not shifting it’s position to implement the statutory instrument (SI) which will see 50 percent of out going cargo being carried by local transporters.

Speaking when he officiated at the Petroleum Transporters Association of Zambia (PTAZ) Annual General Meeting held in Ndola over the weekend, Mr Lungu said government remains steadfast and focused to empower the local people.

Mr Lungu said for a long time now, Zambia’s natural resources have been reaped and transported across borders by foreigners a situation which he said will be changed soon through the new statutory instrument.

He said the SI is expected to be implemented in the first quarter of this year.

And speaking at the same event PTAZ President Robson Malipenga has urged PTAZ members to desist from engaging in criminal activities such as fronting and money laundering.

Mr Malipenga said the association has noted with concern that a number of Zambians are being used by foreign investors to acquire land and register companies at the expense of indeginous Zambians.

He said the trend is disadvantaging fair competition in the sector/ZANIS
