Republican Vice President, Inonge Wina said government will follow up with relevant institutions on the implementation of Statutory Instrument on local content and ensure that it is enacted into law in the shortest possible time.
Mrs Wina said government is committed to promoting local content to ensure that Zambians benefit from the resources in the mining sector.
“It is the desire of government to ensure that Zambians take over the running of the mining sector and that, this can only is done by passing various pieces of legislations,” she said.
She was speaking in Kitwe when she met representatives from the Association of Contractors and Mine Suppliers of Zambia, Zambia Association of Manufacturers, Kitwe District Chamber of Commerce and union leaders in the mining sector.
And Association of Contractors and Mine Suppliers of Zambia President, Augustine Mubanga said suppliers and contractors have for many years faced challenges in accessing contracts in the mining sector.
Mines Union of Zambia President, Joseph Chewe called for the need to engage the local people in the running of mines.
