3 children die in an inferno

Three children of Kafunda village in chief Mibenge’s area in Mansa district have been burnt to death in an inferno after the grass thatched house they were in caught fire.

Luapula Province Police Deputy Commanding Officer, Daniel Mseteka, confirmed the incident to ZANIS in Samfya in an interview yesterday.

Mr Mseketa identified the deceased as Cindy Kamalondo 6, her younger sister Blessings Kalenga 3, and Given Mulubwa aged 3.

He explained that the mother of the deceased children, identified as Juliet Chilekwa 25, went to look for mealie meal, leaving her children at the neighbors’ house.

He said the children were playing inside a grass thatched when one of them lit a fire using a match stick that was left inside the house.

Mr Mseketa said a four-year-old boy managed to escape and went to call for help.

He said when people arrived, the house was already in huge flames such that they could not manage to get in and rescue the children.

He disclosed that the matter was reported to Samfya police station and officers rushed to the scene.

The three bodies were picked and deposited in Samfya district hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem. ZANIS
